Objectives: Urine culture takes 24 to 72 h to report, and most specimens are culture-negative. We evaluated whether a 6-h direct-from-urine growth-detection assay can identify culture-negative specimens. Methods: In a prospective single-centre study at Goa Medical College, 145 consecutive urine specimens from patients with suspected urinary tract infection (UTI) were tested in parallel. Urine (50 uL) was added to SIBURI (nitrate-reduction broth, developed with Griess reagent) and SIBURI+ (Luria-Bertani broth with bromothymol blue) and incubated for 6 h at 37 C.
