Our verdict
Headspace tops our 2026 mental wellness ranking at 7.8/10. The US App Store lists it at $12.99 a month or $69.99 a year, and Headspace's subscription page offers a free trial, cancel-anytime terms and student and family plans. Its evidence is better than most apps in this space: a randomized trial in healthy adults found 10 to 30 days of Headspace improved self-reported stress, life satisfaction and resilience versus a wait-list, and a 2024 meta-analysis of 45 trials found mindfulness apps give small reductions in depression and anxiety symptoms. Those Headspace trials were small and involved company employees, and apps did not beat active therapy comparisons. Treat it as a daily stress tool, not treatment. It is not for emergencies: if you are in crisis, call or text 988 in the US. If symptoms persist or affect daily life, see a licensed clinician; Headspace also offers separate therapy services.

What the evidence says
- A pilot randomized trial in adults from the general population found 10 to 30 days of the Headspace app improved self-reported satisfaction with life, stress and resilience versus a wait-list control. One author was employed by Headspace. (Champion et al., PLoS One 2018 (PubMed))
- A randomized trial found a brief Headspace mindfulness program reduced irritability, negative affect and stress from external pressure more than an audiobook control (between-group d about 0.45). Several authors were Headspace employees. (Economides et al., Mindfulness 2018 (PubMed))
- An updated meta-analysis of 45 randomized trials found mindfulness apps produced small but significant reductions in depression (g = 0.24) and anxiety (g = 0.28) symptoms versus control groups, but no significant advantage over active therapeutic comparisons. (Linardon et al., Clin Psychol Rev 2024 (PubMed))
- The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline can be reached by calling or texting 988 or by chat; it says conversations are free and confidential and it is available 24/7/365. (988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline)
